David Darst, CFA, Senior Advisor and Investment Strategist at The Family Office, shares his market recap for April 2023. Below are the highlights:
The S&P 500 closed April at 4,162, up 8.4% for the year and 1.3% for the month.
The market has done well this year despite concerns about regional banks and the nine interest rate increases so far.
Interest rates rose in April, with the three-month Treasury rising from 3.90% to 5.18%, the two-year Treasury rising from 3.97% to 4.07%, the 10-year Treasury rising from 3.43% to 3.53%, and the 30-year Treasury rising from 3.64% to 3.76%.
The aftermath of the market bubble driven by stimulus payments should be less damaging than previous bubbles.
The VIX Index declined in April to 16.13, well below its long-term average.
The stock market predicts a soft landing with slow growth and inflation, while the bond market predicts a recession.
